Erstwhile seeks to fill an exciting niche in the spirits world all while guided by fair trade, and ethically-minded business practices. Finding micro-production boutique mezcal in the United States can be a challenge at times, which can be made even more difficult by the fact many mezcals that do make it to the US undergo aggressive smoke treatments. Yuan Ji sought to remedy this issue with the creation of Erstwhile, who bottles and distributes high-end spirits from small, oftentimes women-led, family owned mezcal producers.
Bright, botanical, and floral. Perfumery, spice market, and burnt orange on the nose. Lovely notes of green plantain and citrus on the palate. This delightful expression of Arroqueño is the most aromatic of the distillations from Erstwhile Mezcal’s 2018 flagship line.
