Mainente’s ancient, 60-to-80-year-old Garganega and Trebbiano di Soave vines thrive on steep terraces overlooking the town. This patchwork terroir combines clay, black volcanic fossils, and pure white limestone. The old vines coax deep complexity from the soils, conjuring the steely tension of a fine Bourgogne Blanc. Yet, it remains quintessentially Italian, bursting with the white melon, orange zest, and bitter almond notes prized in the misty Po Valley. Ugo Mainente is a longtime maestro of Veneto whites; this 100% Garganega could be labeled Soave, but the importer asked for a special bottling for the US market labeled as the broader Veronese IGT. This is a gorgeous, bright yet elegant white wine with stone fruits, green apple and zesty minerality.
