Description

Il Censo is a 65-hectare estate located in the south-central hills of Sicily near Bivona, and it has been owned by the family of proprietor Gaetano Gargano for over 200 years. While the land historically produced grains, legumes, and olives, much of the agricultural activity had been abandoned until Gaetano and his wife Nicoletta decided to reinvigorate the farm roughly a decade ago. A pivotal moment in the winery's history was Gaetano's friendship with Giampiero Bea—son of the legendary Umbrian producer Paolo Bea—whose low-intervention philosophy and "ancient technique" of skin maceration became the foundation for Il Censo's viticulture. Under Bea’s guidance, the Garganos replanted 5 hectares of hillside vineyards at an elevation of 700 meters with indigenous varieties like Insolia, Catarratto, and Perricone, managing the entire estate with certified organic practices.

The 2023 Gurte Insolia Bianco is a bright and aromatic Sicilian white that balances the delicacy of the Insolia grape with the structured intensity of skin-contact fermentation. On the nose, it offers an enticing profile of citrus peel, white flowers, and honey, often accented by subtle savory notes of leather and wild Mediterranean herbs. The palate is medium-bodied and textural, delivering flavors of ripe pear, apricot, and cantaloupe that are underscored by a distinct salinity and brisk acidity. Its finish is long and complex, characterized by a persistent mineral undertone and a slight, grippy tannin that makes it exceptionally food-friendly.
