Racines is a collaboration led by Étienne de Montille, Brian Sieve of Burgundy and Rodolphe Péters of Champagne. Étienne and Brian had been on an exploratory trip to California and Oregon in search of a place where they could put down roots for an initial project beyond France. In the Santa Rita Hills, they found the precision and finesse they were looking for. Racines Chardonnays show both their Burgundian influence and the cold, east-west geography of Santa Rita Hills. Bentrock in particular is a hilltop, windswept site with rocky soils. These are Chardonnays that deliver racy, linear focus, and understated elegance. At a recent tasting of 2022 and 2023 vintages, however, the 2022 Bentrock was starting to open up, showing lively green apple and sweet lemon curd on the mid-palate.
