We always love tasting the new vintage of this neat wine made by nuns. Yes, that's right, the nuns of Monastero Suore Cistercensi in Umbria tend their vineyard and make this great wine with the help of Paolo Bea's son, Giampiero. It is a blend of Verdicchio, Trebbiano and Malvasia that sees extra skin contact for a deeper concentration and incredibly expressive minerality. Always a stand-out wine, it even gets better with age.
The Bea family history dates back to the 1500s in the beautiful hilltop town of Montefalco, in Umbria, Italy. Their tiny estate has been a working farm for centuries, producing wine, raising animals, growing olives, fruits and vegetables for trade and their own consumption. Paolo Bea started bottling wine in 1980 and has continued his family's tradition of "natural" winemaking; not using any chemical or artificial intervention in the vineyard or the winery, observing the phases of the moon and respecting nature without "dominating" it. And now his sons are helping him out, with Giuseppe taking care of the vineyards and Giampiero assisting Paolo in the cellar.
