Description
Located between Angers and Nantes, this family-run estate in the small village of La Pommeraye enjoys a particularly warm microclimate, which helps to push the grapes to perfect ripeness, even in cooler years. The Loire’s native Cabernet Franc and Chenin Blanc have pride of place here; Domaine Musset-Roullier was established in 1994, when Serge Roullier and Gilles Musset combined their family estates on the banks of the Loire River, along with three generations of winemaking savoir faire on both sides. They practice sustainable farming, following organic practices as much as possible and avoiding excess treatments. Beneficial herbs are planted in between rows to combat pests, with the goal of achieving harmony between man and the vines and earth. Grapes are harvested by hand, and the fruit is fermented with indigenous yeast with a minimal sulfur addition at bottling.
LES NEUF-VIGNT (expressed as the fraction 9/20) is a nod to the medieval practice of métayage, where the peasants worked the land for the nobility and paid “rent” with a fraction of a harvest. Not surprisingly, the landlord’s share of the crop was also the best part of the harvest. 100% Cabernet Franc, this lively, tangy and crunchy red was vinified entirely in stainless-steel. Fresh, fruity and aromatic; it delivers lots of ripe, red summer fruits laced with a touch of violet and sweet green herbs. This wonderfully versatile wine will pair nicely with a generous spread of regional goat cheeses and rustic pâté.
