Description
Gurrieri is a family-run winery in the Ragusa province of Sicily, born from the long-standing passion of Giovanni and Angela, who spent decades cultivating vines for other producers. In 2010, their children, Giovanni and Giada, decided to bottle their own wine, transforming the family’s agricultural roots into a professional estate. Practicing organic farming in the Vittoria region—famed for its red sands and limestone—the family focuses on traditional Sicilian varieties. Their philosophy emphasizes "human-scale" viticulture, ensuring each bottle reflects the unique, sun-drenched terroir of southeast Sicily.
The 2022 Gurrieri Nero d'Avola is crafted using traditional, low-intervention techniques that emphasize the organic character of its Vittoria terroir. Produced in the Chiaramonte Gulfi area from vines rooted in calcareous clay and red sand at approximately 290 meters above sea level, the grapes are hand-harvested in early October and fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks. This concentrated vintage undergoes a maceration period of about two weeks followed by an aging process in a combination of stainless steel and oak for 15 months to achieve a balanced maturation. On the nose, the wine reveals complex layers of dark berry, plum, and chocolate accented by notes of white pepper, earth, and savory spice. The palate is structured yet fresh, featuring bright acidity, a substantial, "meaty" body, and an approachable tannic backbone that leads to a persistent finish with hints of licorice and tea leaf.
