Description
Penedo Gordo is part of the Quinta das Arcas / Monteiro family group, led by winemaker and founder Esteves Monteiro, who successfully transitioned the family business from grape growing to winemaking in 1985. The name Penedo Gordo translates to “fat boulder,” and refers to the large granite rock that overlooks the vineyards. Today, the Monteiro family is one of the top viticulturists and wine producers in Vinho Verde and Alentejo, dedicating themselves to producing wines with a focus on sustainability and modern winemaking. The grapes are grown under integrated protection agriculture, a sustainable system that reduces chemical inputs and emphasizes environmental care. The winery is based in Orada, in the Borba municipality of the Alentejo, a warm inland region known for ripe, generous wines. The property totals around 200 hectares, including about 120 hectares of vineyards planted mainly with local Alentejo grape varieties and roughly 25 hectares of olive groves.
The 2023 SELECTION Tinto is a blend of 40% Alicante Bouschet, 30% Touriga Nacional and 30% Syrah. Fermentation was in temperature controlled stainless-steel vats with skin maceration, and lasted 5–7 days, aged for 4 months in second use oak barrels. This delicious wine boasts loads of ripe red fruit and exotic spices on the nose and palate. Fleshy and generously fruited, with flavors of dark cherry, sweet plum and currant, rolled together with a velvety texture, soft tannins and a smooth, balanced finish.
