Description
Marco Carpineti’s estate is located in the tiny hill town of Cori in the Lazio region of Italy. Like many Italian wine regions, Lazio’s vine heritage is ancient. The Carpineti family has worked this land for generations and Marco is a true artisan, preserving the viticultural history of Cori by producing wines made from historic, low-yielding varieties that are full of character. In 1986 Marco left his previous job, took control of about 4 hectares of vineyards and olive groves, and formally founded the modern winery that now bears his name. The winery adopted certified organic viticulture in the 1990s and later introduced biodynamic practices, emphasizing sustainability, landscape protection, and respect for labor and local culture. The estate became one of the first in Lazio to produce classic‑method sparkling wines from indigenous grapes, launching KIUS as a flagship expression of this experimental approach.
The 2022 KIUS is a unique, fascinating, and delicious sparkling wine, made entirely from Bellone; an ancient white Italian grape variety native to the Lazio region, with historical references dating back to Roman times as noted by Pliny the Elder. Soft pressing of whole berries and fermentation at a controlled temperature, with tirage from April to June 2023 and aging on the lees for 24 months. Aromas of fresh citrus and pear with tropical notes. The palate is bright and lively, with flavors of pineapple with beeswax and a delicate bitter-almond note. Medium bodied with a good balance of fruit, structural complexity and vibrant acidity, leading to a persistent, flavorful finish.
