Description
This is a classic Gruner Veltliner with the telltale white pepper and green pea/lentil aromas on the nose and crunchy green and Braeburn apple flavors on the medium to full bodied palate. The fruit flavors are well concentrated and the wine has considerable weight with a fairly plush and appealing texture. It finishes with snappy acidity on a nice dry and crisp note.
Ingrid Groiss pursued other interests before returning home to Breitenwaida to continue her family’s tradition of winemaking in Weinviertel, Austria. Weinviertel is located in the northeastern part of the country bordering the Czech Republic in the north and Slovakia to the east, and is Austria’s largest wine region. Ingrid is very thankful that her grandmother didn’t let go of the family vineyards; Pulkautal in Haugsdorf and Fahndorf near Ziersdorf, from which she crafts a Gemischter Satz (a wine of the Weinviertel that can have up to 50 different red and white grapes), a couple Rieslings and five different bottlings of Gruner Veltliner, which is her specialty. Just as she sustainably farms her grapes, she interferes very minimally once they are in the cellar and generally ferments and ages everything in stainless steel, using only older oak barrels for her reserve bottlings.
