Description

Château Phélan Ségur was originally founded by an Irishman named Bernard O'Phelan in the early 1800s. Bernard left his hometown of Tipperary to go to Bordeaux and become a wine merchant. Once there, he married a French woman whose father was also a Bordeaux wine merchant named Daniel Guestier. With the help of his new father-in-law, Bernard was able to purchase the Clos de Garramey property in Saint-Estèphe in 1805 and then acquired Ségur de Cabanac in 1810. It wasn't until a century later that the estate became known as Phélan Ségur, and its place in the pantheon of great Saint-Estèphe Châteaux would be solidified. Since 1985, the Gardiniers, a French family, have owned the property, with Xavier and his three sons helping to take the fabled land into the 21st century. In 2010, they were joined by Veronique Dausse as Director of the Château, making her one of the few women behind a Bordeaux label. Ruby red dress with purple highlights. Intense bouquet of wild strawberry, freshly picked Morello cherry, blackcurrant, cedar, tobacco, dried rosemary, and delicate violet perfume. Balanced, bright, and punchy. It trades a bit of heavy mid-palate density for energy, freshness, and a precise, fine-grained, silky-yet-firm tannin structure with classic "Saint-Estèphe claws" and a long, peppery/saline finish.

75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot, and 4% Petit Verdot.
