Description

Gabriel Pisano is the latest generation of the iconic Pisano family to take up the winemaker's mantle, and Viña Progreso is his project to showcase the evolution of fine Uruguayan wine. This country is small and its wine industry is small, especially compared to Argentina and Chile. Tannat in particular has had a reputation for very tannic reds, but that is little more than a cliché at this point. While the grape variety has thick skins and ample tannin, Uruguay produces a wide variety of Tannats, from cellar-worthy reds, to carbonic "porch-pounders, vermouth, sparkling, rosé - almost every style imaginable. This delicious red falls in the middle of the stylistic spectrum, with ample richness of fruit supported by firm but fine-grained tannin. Very drinkable now, but easily built to develop in a proper cellar for 5–7 years.
