Description

Málaga is one of the least well-known wine regions of Andalusia. It is a historic wine region, its wines were mentioned by Shakespeare and when Christie's first started auctioning wines, the wines of Málaga fetched similar prices to those of Burgundy and Rhine. It is a very mountainous and extremely hard to work, so when the hardships of phylloxera most commercial interests died in the region. Molino Real is a Telmo Rodriguez and Pablo Eguzkiza project that was started in 1996. It was an effort to reclaim or resurrect the famous wines from the mountains of Málaga.

The varietal here is Moscatel de Alexandria, they are farmed organically, and after harvest the wines are brought from the mountains to the winery. The grapes are then dehydrated, placed on special mats, and let the sun do its thing. It takes 10 kilos of grapes to produce 2.5 kilos of raisins, which yields just one liter of juice to ferment into wine. Fermentation takes place with native yeasts in stainless steel tanks. The resulting wine is one of the great sweet wines of Spain. This is a luscious wine with mouthwatering acidity and 128g/L residual sugar.

The fruit profile is fresh; white peaches and sweet citrus, with an exotic herbal tone which adds complexity and brings out even more fruit. This is a wine that easily stands next to the more well-known sweet wines from Europe.
