Description

Estate founder Antonin Faravel once said, “If you want a great Burgundy, buy a young Gigondas and age it.” The family’s high-altitude vineyards showcase old-vine Grenache at its most silky and spicy. A stunningly supple and complexly flavored wine every vintage. Antonin started his wine career at the young age of 14 working at Domaine Pierre Amadieu and was the head vineyard manager by the time he turned 30. He developed his own vineyard on land he inherited from his father and planted his first vines at the foot of the famous Dentelles de Montmirail mountain range in Gigondas in 1956. He initially sold his fruit to Domaine Amadieu, and then in 1978 he started making his own wine under the Domaine La Bouïssiere label. He sadly passed away in 1988, and his wife and children took over running the business. His son, Thierry, makes the wines now and is producing some of the best blends in the Southern Rhône Valley from the family's plots in Gigondas, Vacqueyras and Beaumes-de-Venise. This 2022 Gigondas is 73% Grenache and 27% Syrah, which was hand-harvested. Partially destemmed (61%) and lightly crushed, then fermented on indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled cement tanks. Aged in cement tank (35%) and older foudre (65%), from two to five years old. Wine is moved via gravity, bottled unfined and unfiltered, with minimal added sulfites. Aromas of black fruits and pink and white peppers; flavors of blackberries and blue plums. Unctuous texture with silky tannins. It shows vigor, depth of fruit, and impeccable balance, making for a very classy Gigondas!
