We had to search to find a classic red, frizzante style Lambrusco that wasn't too sweet or overly tannic and are delighted to have discovered this gem from Fattoria Moretto. The Secco (dry) bottling has all the dark plum, red fruit driven flavors one would expect, along with a nice dried herb quotient. Yet, it's the overall structure and concentration of the wine that is most appealing. It is both serious and bright and fruity, ready to go with a wide variety of different food pairings or just as enjoyable to drink on its own. Fattoria Moretto was founded in 1971 by Domenico and Albertina Altariva. Domenico was a salesman who also loved wine and figured he could plant some Lambrusco Grasparossa vines to produce wine for their own family consumption. Beyond what they enjoyed at home, the Altarivas started selling their wine in bulk to private clients and then began bottling their own production in 1991 when their sons, Fabio and Fausto came aboard. With the acquisition of another four hectares of vines in the hills of Castelvetro near Modena, and the construction of a new winery, the Altarivas were on their way to becoming a key player in the artisanal, smaller production world of Lambrusco. By 1997, the Moretto estate achieved organic certification which was pretty rare for the region at the time. Wine importer, Kermit Lynch has been bringing these wines in for years and has this to say about them, “Moretto is to Lambrusco what Tempier and Terrebrune are to rosé. It reminds me of the best reds of Bandol and Tuscany, with herbs like thyme, and a sort of dusty mineral quality, like you find in some of the top Bordeaux and Tuscan wines.”
