Kiuchi Brewery resides in the quiet city of Naka Japan, just 100 miles North of Tokyo. Founded in 1823 by village headsman, Kiuchi Gihei as a producer of Sake and Shōchū (a Japanese distilled beverage), Kiuchi Brewery is now, eight generations later, more famous for its top-fermented, Belgian style ales. The family branched out into the Craft beer world in 1996 when the beer industry in Japan was deregulated, affording them the freedom to improvise and create unique products (as opposed to the stricter Sake regulations where brewers are judged on their adherence to tradition). The delicately complex brewing methods and meticulously involved processes involved in Sake production have been passed down to their Beer Brewing philosophy. The Kiuchi family proudly named their beer brand ‘Hitachino Nest’ after the ‘Hitachino Province’ that offers fertile land which supplies many of their beer’s unique flavorings, and ‘Nest,’ as in a home from which carefully crafted beers take off. From this surrounding, fertile land, Kiuchi Brewery sources indigenous ingredients such as ‘Fukure Mikan’ mandarins, ‘Kaneko Golden’ barley and ‘Asamurasaki’ red rice, which is used in the production of this Red Rice Ale! Side note: since this Ale incorporates the actual bran of the rice, the resulting beer is not only rich in color and aroma, but also Anthocyanin, a powerful antioxidant!
Featured in our Beer Club last year, this uniquely delicious brew offers aromas of strawberry, white pepper, soft spice and caramel on the light to medium-bodied palate. Complex in character yet very easy-drinking, there is a nice balance between savory notes like earthy sake, tart fruit and rhubarb and an ever so subtle sweetness. A very versatile beer, enjoy with takeout sushi or any Japanese-style seafood or poultry recipe.
