This ‘Rosa’ Rosé is a blend of 40% Zweigelt, 30% Blaufrankisch and 30% Saint Laurent that was fermented in stainless steel tanks. We were really intrigued by this wine because we don't often see Austrian roses in general, and more specifically, Austrian roses that are blends of the three main red varietals planted in that country. Yet, in the hands of Josef Umathum, he somehow crafted a rose with flair that also has a good amount of substance. Starting with the incredible 'raspberry red' color, the nose is all about raspberries and cherries that follow as flavors on the lightly medium bodied palate which has surprising weight and texture. The wine ends with a slight spritz and the suggestion of a structure one would expect from a red wine. As our contact at the importer continues to note, this is a 'year-round rose' that can stand up to food yet can easily be enjoyed on its own.
