This wildly popular wine continues to be one of our customer favorites and is still hard to keep in stock. Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah, Syrah and Charbono continue to play a supporting role in this boldly flavored Zinfandel based red blend. Like all previous vintages, it is dark, jammy, ripe, juicy, and very big in body and flavor. Even though it is has a lot of personality it wasn't conceived as a "let's put a bunch of ripe grapes together and see what happens" kind of thing. Dave Phinney created the Prisoner in a nod to the origins of Napa Valley when Italian immigrants would make "mixed blacks" of their field blends often including Zinfandel and grapes like Petite Sirah, Charbono and Alicante Bouschet. He wanted to source fruit through sites with that same old Napa heritage and was proud to be able to include grapes from old vine vineyards like Solari (third generation Italian-American family), Tofanelli (planted in the 1950s) and the 100+ year old Korte Ranch. A lot of the Prisoner's depth and concentration comes from these great old vines and is the reason we use the maximum of 5 on intensity and body in our profiling icons. Dave, who has moved on to other projects now, really hit the jackpot with his inaugural release in 2003 and the wine has maintained its spectacular popularity ever since.
