We don't often see much red Txakolina since it's the spritzy, fizzy, thirst quenching white versions that get all the attention. However, this Tinto struck us with lots of personality in a fun, punchy red kind of way. Spicy and peppery, snappy and savory with crunchy red berry flavors and a very crisp finish, it is pretty darn easy going down -- and might even be better with a slight chill. We think it's the ideal choice when you're in the mood for a Spanish red that will go with lots of different food pairings and not be overly fruity, heavy or dense. Doniene Gorrondona is an old vineyard and winery in Spain’s Basque Country that was re-habilitated by a trio of friends led by the married couple, Itziar and Andoni Insausti. It is located in the Bakio Valley by the shore of the Bay of Biscay in Bizkaia, thought to be the birthplace of Txakolina wine with a history going back centuries. Ironically, it didn’t receive its D.O. status until 1994, five years after Getariako Txakolina was certified as the first official D.O. Txakoli appellation in 1989. The main difference between the wines from each D.O.s is the fact that those from Bizkaiko Txakolina tend to have less spritz and are fuller bodied with a richer, rounder texture than in Getariako Txakolina, which is closer to the ocean and therefore captures more of that overt salty sea air character. The 15 hectares of Gorrondona vines are farmed organically and planted to the two classic varietals, Hondarrabi Zuri (the white grape) and Hondarrabi Beltza (the red grape) along with Folle Blanche, or Mune Mahatsa as it’s called in Biscay.
