Chateau Phelan Segur was originally founded by an Irishman named Bernard O'Phelan in the early 1800s. Bernard left his hometown of Tipperary to go to Bordeaux and become a wine merchant. Once there, he married a French woman whose father was also a Bordeaux wine merchant named Daniel Guestier. With the help of his new father-in-law, Bernard was able to purchase the Clos de Garramey property in Saint-Estèphe in 1805, and then acquired Ségur de Cabanac in 1810. It wasn't until a century later that the estate became known as Phelan-Segur and its place in the pantheon of great Saint-Estephe Chateaux would be solidified. Since 1985, the Gardiniers, a French family, has owned the property with Xavier and his three sons helping to take the fabled land into the 21st century. In 2010, they were joined by Veronique Dausse as Director of the Chateau, making her one of the few women behind a Bordeaux label. The current day vineyard covers 70 hectares planted 58% to Cabernet Sauvignon, 39% Merlot, 1.5% to Malbec and 1.5% to Petit Verdot. The final blend is aged for 12 months in no more than 50% new French oak barrels before being bottled. Given the incredible quality of the 2010 vintage, this Phelan-Segur will reward any lover of great Bordeaux now and in years to come.
