This is the benchmark for Kerner and it's always a consistently classy wine. Aromatic, bright and beguiling, this beauty resonates with aromas and flavors of tree fruits like Braeburn apple and just ripe yellow peach, along with subtle tropical fruits like mango and a hint of pineapple. Fuller bodied on the palate with a texture bordering on opulent, it ends with bright acidity on the crisp finish. Enologist, Celestino Lucin, who was named ‘Winemaker of the Year’ in 2009 by Gambero Rosso, recommends pairing it with cold summer pasta salads, yet notes it has the weight to hold up to pork, veal, roast chicken or swordfish.
Abbazia is the Italian word for ‘abbey’ and Novacella is the name of the town in the northern part of the Isarco Valley of the Italian Alps where the abbey and winery are located. Originally established in 1142, the monks of the Augustinian Order of Canons Regular still run the abbey today and oversee the organic farming of their vineyards and the production of their wines. Abbazia di Novacella has been revered as one of Alto Adige’s finest producers, especially admired for their whites and specifically for their Kerner, for many years.
