This is a delicious, classic Carneros Chardonnay offering flavors of green apple, melon and lemon-lime citrus with a cool mineral-tinged focus. The wine shows good concentration thanks to the 40+ year old vines on the Poseidon Vineyard as well as extended lees stirring. The eight months of barrel aging in 30% new Hungarian oak add texture to the medium-to-full body but not much in the way of any woody, oaky notes. It is that wet stone minerality and bright acidity that achieves the lovely balance, offering a wine that appeals to lovers of Chardonnay from California to Burgundy. Brothers, Arpad and Peter Molnar, and their friend, Michael Terrien, came together in 2004 to found Tricycle Wine Partners. With Michael as the winemaker, the trio produces about a dozen wines sourced from the great quality fruit of their Poseidon Vineyard in Carneros that was planted by Arpad and Peter's father in 1973, and the Obsidian Ridge estate vineyard in Lake County which the Molnars planted in 1999. They use 100% Kádár Hungary oak barrels which they import directly from the Molnars' homeland of Hungary in all their wines to a deft and subtle effect.
