Description

This 2017 Camins del Priorat is a blend of 40% Garnacha, 30% Samso, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Syrah which was fermented in stainless steel as well as cement and large wooden vats where it was aged for eight months before being bottled. It is that rare Priorat that shows balance and panache at the same time. There is no heavy handed oak to overwhelm the clean red fruit flavors and savory notes of this elegantly put together wine. Instead, it speaks very well of its place and in the hands of the very talented winemaker, Alvaro Palacios, delivers a subtle richness for which the region is known and at the same time a light, fruity personality. It is a very popular item in our Spanish section so we plan to keep it around as long as it's available. Having learned at the feet of Bordeaux master, Jean –Pierre Moueix of Château Pétrus, one of France’s master winemakers, Alvaro returned to Spain with a renewed energy and vigor to do something special in his homeland. Instead of staying in Rioja to work at the family estate, he ventured a little further south to Catalonia where he was ‘drawn to the largely abandoned ancient vineyards’ of the incredibly steep mountains and sloping hills of Priorato. His first vineyard acquisition was the Finca Dofi in 1990, followed three years later by the purchase of one of the region’s prized sites of old vine Garnacha which had been planted over the years spanning between 1900-1940. Alvaro would later name it, “L’Ermita” after the small chapel/hermitage atop the hill and the wines he made from this special place went on to become some of the most highly regarded in all of Spain.
