The legacy of Kathryn Kennedy lives on through her son, Marty Mathis who continues to craft highly regarded Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah in Saratoga where Kathryn first planted vines over 30 years ago. While the estate wines are legendary for their fine ageability, Marty conceived of the Lateral Red Blend as the Kathryn Kennedy wine that is more approachable and ready to drink upon release. He was inspired by the great wines of Bordeaux, specifically St. Emilion with an increasing emphasis on Merlot and Cabernet Franc, and now sources his fruit from Napa Valley. This 2015 represents the 27th vintage of Lateral and it is yet another delicious, well-rounded, wonderfully balanced wine. It is the same percentage blend as the 2013, 65% Merlot and 35% Cabernet Franc Marty describes it as follows, " Darkest Lateral in recent years. Alluring and expressive nose of smashed black cherries, pencil lead, warm earth aromas that feature hints of spices such as cedar wood box, dried rose petals and mint candy. Rich black cherry in the mouth. This wine has that “wow factor” with deep, rich and complex fruit flavors and a smooth satisfying texture with a lower tannin leading to a lithe and silky finish. Begs for “big boy” food pairing without a need for cellaring."
