Thomas Fogarty has always made one of California's best Gewurztraminers and this 2014 follows perfectly from the 2013 we enjoyed so much. The nose exudes classic aromas of the varietal with scents of rose water, lychee, sweet gardenia and jasmine. The aromas continue onto the medium bodied palate which also offers mango and tropical fruit flavors. The finish is bright with good balancing acidity that prevents the wine from being cloying or overly rich. It is pretty light on its feet for Gewurztraminer and a very tasty wine at that!
Thomas Fogarty is a 30-acre wine estate in the Santa Cruz Mountains. The vineyards are farmed organically and planted primarily to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir and smaller amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The only non-estate grown wine Thomas Fogarty makes is this Gewürztraminer from the Scheid Viento Vineyard in Salinas Valley. It started as an experiment in 1984 to see if a few Gewürztraminer blocks on his friend’s vineyard would make a decent wine. The response was so overwhelmingly positive that they have been making it ever since, and it is ironically one of the wines for which Thomas Fogarty is so well known.
