This ever so tasty Beaumes-de-Venise from Chateau Redortier has been one of our perennial all time favorites when it comes to wines from the southern Rhone Valley of France. It is typically a blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre, but unlike most wines from the southern Rhone, this blend typically shows more Syrah up front than Grenache, which might be the key to its success. Aromas offer pretty peppery notes on top of that wonderful herbal, sage-y "garrigue" scent only found in the south of France, while the mouth fills with ripe but nicely toned dark red and black fruit flavors that glide across the medium to full bodied. The wine ends with a wonderful silky finish of subtle minerality. For those who don't yet know this wine, one sip should be all it takes to make it your go-to Rhone!
