This 2012 comes from the small Prapò vineyard below Sergio’s house which sits at 350-370 meters (1,150-1,225 feet) above sea level. The oldest vines were planted by Ettore and date back to 1967 while other parcels were planted more recently. Sergio makes this wine in the very traditional Barolo way with long macerations of at least 30 days and ages it for 24 months in large, old botti (barrel casks.) Here is what Oliver McCrum, who imports the Germano wines, says about it: “The Barolo from this vineyard is one of my favorites in the whole appellation. It shows aromas and flavors of red-currants, dark chocolate (this is not related to oak, and is a typical Serralunga note, Sergio tells me), sandalwood, true cinnamon, licorice and tar; in structure it is chewy yet still elegant, and it ages incomparably. This is not one of the most famous vineyards in the Barolo appellation but in my book it’s certainly ‘Premier Cru’ quality.”
