This 2011 Mencia from Bodegas Godelia was fermented in stainless steel and aged for 12 months in 400 liter French oak barrels as well as small amphorae. Its dark, opaque, ruby red color announces the vibrancy and density of the fruit which is impressive and surprising given its age. The nose is heady with robust aromas of ripe dark cherry, black plum, black licorice, cloves and peppery spice along with an underlying note of earth, old leather and smoke. The full-bodied palate offers continued dark fruit flavors including plum, cherry and cassis with tremendous concentration and a rich, juicy mouthfeel. Ending with well integrated tannins and good balancing acidity, this Mencia can stand up to heartier fare and would pair wonderfully with a savory Spanish dish such as pan-fried chorizo with tomatoes and chickpeas.
