Winemaker, Christian Coquillette, has always believed in ageing his Champagnes for extended periods of time. Ever since he took over the reins from his parents in 1950, he has amassed several hundreds of thousands of bottles of aged Champagne in his mile long cellar underneath the humble estate house in Epernay. He waited 10 years to release this 2008 wine and once again, it was worth the wait. The character of this 100% Chardonnay fruit isn't as a vibrant of course as their non-vintage, showing more tertiary flavors and lovely minerality, but the acidity is still bright and refreshing. The nose shows a bit of that oxidized Sherry aroma that is very appealing. The palate has a subtle creamy weight for added texture and complexity. The overall impression of the wine is one of a gracefully aged Chardonnay that just happens to have beautiful, persistent bubbles. Most definitely a gourmand, special occasion Champagne.
