Our co-owners, Peter Granoff, M.S. and Debbie Zachareas had the great honor of visiting the Tokaj wine region of Hungary last year. They toured the top estates and brought back some really special gems, including two still Furmint wines we featured in our Wine Club. We also received a few spectacular Tokaji Aszu dessert wines and this 2007 5 Puttonyos from Beres Estate is one of them! The winery describes this 2007 as follows, "Its fragrance displays the scent of tropical fruits, acacia honey and apricot. Its two years of ageing in oak casks has added to its flavour the aroma of vanilla and spices and made it a harmonic, elegant drink. It is best described by pleasant acids and creamy, lasting taste." Dr. Jȯzsef Béres Sr. was a famous Hungarian cancer researcher and bio-chemist who developed the Béres Drops, a dietary supplement proven to strengthen the immune system, reduce cholesterol and stress levels and significantly help cancer patients recover their health. He was also passionate about wine and planted vineyards in his garden to make wine for his family and friends. Dr. Béres' granddaughter, Melinda Regéczy-Béres, who holds impressive credentials as well with a degree in Economics from the Corvinus University of Budapest and an MBA she acquired in the Netherlands, shares her grandfather's passion for wine. After her parents purchased a property with 10 hectares of vineyards planted in the Bénye Basin near the village of Erdőbénye, said to be one of the most beautiful and in the "geometrical center" of Tokaj-Hegyalja, Melinda founded Béres Vineyards in 2002. Under her guidance the family planted another 35 hectares of vines and constructed a state of the art winery where they produce both traditional Tokaji-Aszú dessert wines as well as "youthful, trendy, lighter style wines."
