Madeira comes from the volcanic island of same name 400 miles off the coast of North Africa. The Portuguese first landed on Madeira in 1419, and its unique wines evolved in part from the island’s role as a provisioning stop for trading vessels. Malmsey Madeiras are quite rich and sweet. They are delicious with nut tarts, blue veined cheeses, or simply on their own. Fine Madeira is practically immortal, even after a bottle is opened, so don’t hesitate to have an occasional glass at home. If it takes weeks to finish the bottle (not likely ;>) it truly won’t matter. - Peter Granoff
