Born into the trade, Bartholomew Broadbent followed his legendary father, Michael Broadbent, internationally respected wine author, and Master of Wine, into the wonderful world of wine. Upon arrival in Toronto, where he went to work for Symington Ports, he was almost immediately summoned to San Francisco to start an import company for them instead. Ten years later, after becoming known as “America’s foremost Port and Madeira authority,” he decided to produce these lovely elixirs under his own Broadbent label and founded Broadbent Selections in 1996. That happens to be the same year this delicious 1996 Colheita or vintage dated Madeira was made. Produced with the red, Tinta Negra grape, as opposed to the four main noble white varietals of Sercial, Bual, Malvasia and Verdehlo, this medium-sweet Madeira exhibits a deeper concentration and more red wine-like qualities with excellent balancing acidity. While it could clearly age splendidly for another many years, it seems to be at its proverbial 'sweet spot' right now and should be enjoyed after a satisfying meal or alongside a salty and savory dish. Bartholomew’s sincere passion for these great fortified wines ultimately influenced the tremendous growth in consumption and popularity of Port and Madeira in North America. And his incredibly high standards for quality have ensured that his Broadbent wines are considered amongst the elite coming from Porto and Madeira.
