Produced by Brouwerij De Brabandere in Bavikhove, Belgium, this delicious ‘Petrus Aged Pale’ is considered by many to be the benchmark of aged sour beers and has won multiple gold medals in beer competitions worldwide. It is aged 24 months in large oak Foeders as opposed to oak casks which would impart a strong oak taste. These Foeders allow for a 'controlled oxidation' whereby air slowly penetrates the wood and enters the beer, resulting in a pleasantly sour taste and fruity aroma. Touted as the ‘Mother Beer’, Petrus Aged Pale has also been used (since the brewery's inception in 1894) as a blending-beer with other styles such as the 'Aged Red' and 'Rood Bruin' to give them fresh, slightly sour flavors and aromas.
Notes of roasted lemon, tart apple skin and a slight earthiness flow onto a vibrant, juicy and sour palate with notes of granny smith apple, crisp pear, meyer lemon, a light woodiness and oak spice. -Jayne
