Hendry is more well known for their wonderful Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon wines but they also make a lot of great whites, like this zesty and bright Albarino! It has been one of our favorite domestic Albarinos that typically expresses tropical, kiwi-like aromas on the nose while the palate is more citrus and stone fruit driven with a hint of fresh garden flowers. The wine is light-to-medium bodied with a nice, expressive juicy core on the mid-palate and a pleasingly dry and crisp finish. Mike Hendry didn't expose it to any oak, just a little extra time in stainless steel after fermentation to bring out the natural aromatics of the Albarino grape. Of the 2016 he says it has a "softer, more rounded palate than some previous vintages. Plenty of acid on the finish makes for a reliable partner in traditional pairings with crab, mussels, oysters and shellfish. Other pairing ideas: white pizza with marinated artichokes and spinach, a simply grilled white fish, lemony Caesar salad, even sushi." Doesn't that all sound delicious?!
Albarino was first planted on the Hendry estate in Block 9B in 2003 and again in 2013 at Block 2 when they grafted it over from Pinot Gris. Hendry Ranch is a historic 203-acre property in the foothills of the Mayacamas Mountains of Napa Valley. Sections of the estate were once the site of some of the first wine grape vines planted in Napa County over 150 years ago by Frederick and John Sigrist in 1859. The Hendry family has owned the land since 1939 yet didn't start producing their own wines until 1992. George Hendry and his nephew, Mike Hendry are the talented winemaking duo behind the wines today which they source from their 49 different blocks of 11 distinct varietals of sustainably farmed vines.
