There isn't much Erbaluce di Caluso that makes it to the States so we were really excited to discover this lovely example from Tenuta Roletto. Erbaluce is a grape that produces wines with a good amount of acidity thus the best ones have a fair amount of fruit to balance that vibrancy, as this one does. The flavor profile leans towards crisp apple and lemon citrus with a nice essence of minerality. This is not only a delicious Erbaluce, it's also quite the steal at only $20 a bottle.
Since the early 1900s when Giovanni Tinetti first started cultivating vines in Caluso, the Erbaluce grape has been the main focus of the estate. They do grow a little Nebbiolo and Barbera for their Canavese Rosso bottlings but Erbaluce is king at Tenuta Roletto. It has origins dating back to the 1600s and almost went extinct were it not for the efforts of a few key producers in Caluso like Luigi Ferrando, who helped save it from eventual demise.
