2015 Domaine des Ardoisieres, Cuvee Argile Rouge, IGP St Pierre de Soucy, Savoie, France

This is a really cool wine from the tiny appellation of Saint-Pierre de Soucy near Chambery in the Savoie region of France. It comes to us from Domaine des Ardoisieres, a 17-acre biodynamic estate overlooking the town of Freterive in the shadow of Mont Blanc in the French Alps near the Swiss border. It is a blend of 80% Gamay and 20% Persan that feels both delicate and well saturated at the same time. The nose offers slightly smoky aromas along with a touch of white pepper and not quite ripe raspberry. The palate is light to medium bodied with flavors of bright red fruits more on the bitter than the sweet end of the scale, like pomegranate and cassis. The wine concludes with an elegant silky texture and a definitive stony minerality. It is reminiscent of lighter reds from the Jura like Poulsard or Trousseau though perhaps not as aromatic as those, and with more edgy minerality. It should pair well with a variety of different foods.

Brice Omont, a native of Champagne, has been the winemaker since 2005 and is today considered one of the most innovative and exciting winemakers in France. He has elevated the wines to an extraordinary level, using native yeast fermentations and very little new oak to capture the unique terroir and incredible minerality of this special place in the Alps. The total production is also very low with only about 500 cases of each wine which are parceled out to eager accounts in France and the US.
