We certainly count ourselves lucky to receive an allocation of Cathy Corison's spectacular Cabernet Sauvignons. We only wish we could get more, as they are gaining new fans every day and unfortunately, there is not as much to go around these days as there was a few years ago. Still, we are thrilled to be able to showcase her 2014 vintage. Like all of Cathy's Cabernets, regardless of vintage "quality" this is another lovely, elegant wine that is showing beautifully now but will only get better with time in the cellar. As usual, she achieves just the right amount of fruit in balance with just the right amount of oak to make a truly graceful Cabernet Sauvignon.
Cathy is an extremely talented yet incredibly humble winemaker who has quietly been crafting some of the finest Cabernet Sauvignon in Napa Valley since 1986. So when she describes her own wines, it is not with hubris or arrogance, just a clear confidence in what she was able to accomplish. In her own words, "Harmony and unity define this vintage. With a year in the bottle, the 2014 is beginning to blossom. A warm spring, following one of the driest winters on record, got the ball rolling early with the set of small, concentrated berries. Moving into summer, the remainder of the season was moderate, giving us the long, cool season I hope for. Leaning more toward the darker end of the Cabernet fruit spectrum this year, the wine exhibits plum, black raspberry and blackberry aromas and flavors while maintaining the red cherry core typical of Corison Napa Valley Cabernet. Hints of exotic garrigue include savory thyme, rosemary, violet and rose scents. Minerality adds verve, and top notes of smoke, baking spices, cedar and dark chocolate complete the kaleidoscopic complexity. - Cathy Corison
