2015-C Markus Prackwieser Gump Vernatsch, Alto Adige, Italy

The Schiava grape, believed to have originated in Alto Adige, is known as ‘Vernatsch’ in German and is typically used on wine labels from producers with Austrian roots as is the case here with this lovely example from Markus Prackwieser. He fermented the wine in stainless steel tank and aged it in neutral 'botte grande', large Slovenian oak casks, for about six months before bottling. It shows classic Schiava character with a very light, clear red color and pretty red rose floral aromatics on the nose along with scents of cherry and a touch of white pepper. The light-bodied palate is fresh and thirst-quenching with flavors of dried cherries and just underripe raspberry. While the texture feels both silky and a bit rustic at the same time, the finish is crisp and bright with vibrant acidity. This is a very charming, absolutely quaffable wine that's even better with a bit of a chill and is our go to for a lighter alternative to Pinot Noir. - Drea
