Todd Gottula and his super cool wife, Erin Brooks, produce a handful of vineyard-designate and appellation Pinot Noir and Chardonnay under their Ernest Vineyards label. We have known the wines since their launch and can definitely claim that they have all been really good, well made, pure expressions of their varietal and place/terroir. This 2014 'The Wrangler' was sourced from the wind-swept 15-acre Grand Vent Vineyard in the soon-to-be official sub AVA of Petaluma Gap in Sonoma Coast. It was aged for 18 months in 35% new French oak barrels and Todd and Erin describe it as follows, "dense coloration hints at the intensity of this bold and enticing Pinot Noir with intriguing sappy aromas that include wild berries, rose hips and wet earth. The palate is lush yet savory with balanced acidity and present tannins with notes of dried herbs, forest floor and a touch of tanned leather." We couldn't have stated it any better.
