We were floored by this 2013 100% Merlot and knew it would be the perfect complement to complete our Bordeaux varietal theme for this month’s Red Cellar Trio club. The fruit for this delicious wine comes from a single 32 year old vineyard (we can't divulge the grower name) whose microclimate, soil type and overall terroir mirror those of some of the great Right Bank Bordeaux vineyards. After fermenting in stainless steel, the wine was aged for 20 months in one third new and two thirds used French oak barrels. Mr. Maroon intended to age it in bottle for another six months but released it after only two since the wine was singing and ready to go! The color is a clear, medium light red that nicely telegraphs the pretty aromatic nose with scents of black cherry, blackberry, savory dried herb, a light floral tinge, a little red licorice, a subtle peppery spice and a hint of toasty oak. Those juicy, fresh fruit flavors abound on the fuller-bodied palate which feels generous without being rich, with a rounded, silky texture that flows neatly onto the nicely dry finish of medium toned tannins.
