Proprietor and winemaker, Patrick McNeil chose the name 'Brainchild' because "it's the moment when creativity happens and it's the dynamic environment where anything is actually possible." The 2013 Brainchild is a blend of 75% Petite Sirah, 13% Zinfandel and 12% Grenache which he sourced from three Napa Valley vineyards: Kenefick Ranch, Muhlner Steps and Somerston. The fruit was de-stemmed, fermented in stainless steel and aged for 18 months in neutral French oak barrels. Aromas on the nose are dark fruited with blackberry and black plum principally as well as scents of smoky tobacco, sandalwood and peppery spice. The full-bodied palate reveals a richly textured wine followed by a slightly grippy finish of firm tannins. It is just begging for a big ol juicy piece of smoked, braised or grilled meat and should be able to stand up to the heartiest cut imaginable. The total production for this wine is only 200 cases.
