The wines of Vina Sastre are so well made they almost feel simple, yet they are nothing but. It's just that there isn't any extra oak or fancy winemaking tricks to get in the way of their pristine fruit. This 2012 Crianza is 100% Tempranillo sourced from the estate’s vines which range in age between 20-65 years old. As stipulated by the DO rules for Crianza wines, it was aged for two years; 18 months in new French oak and six months in bottle before release. It is what a Ribera del Duero Crianza should be, a clear expression of Tempranillo with a wonderful note of crushed pepper, cedary spice and dark red plum skin on a bed of well integrated tannins and a clean, fresh finish.
Viña Sastre is a family run estate located in the village of La Horra in the heart of Ribera del Duero. It is one of the most respected in the DO and consistently produces high quality, elegant Tempranillo based wines, starting at the value-driven Tinto Joven level up to the Pago Gran Reserva level. The Ribera del Duero DO allows for Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec (see the influence of Bordeaux), Garnacha and Albillo to be grown, yet Viña Sastre only has Tempranillo, Cabernet and Merlot. Jesus Sastre is the winemaker and vineyard manager who proudly farms his family's vineyards, inherited from his father and grandfather, organically and biodynamically.
