This 2012 Rouge is a blend of 65% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon. Each varietal was vinified separately and the final blend was aged for 12 months in 80% stainless steel tanks and 20% French oak barrels. There is a wonderful earthy quality to this wine that can only come from the French countryside. Besides the earth tones, the nose is also gamey, slightly floral and especially garrigue-scented which of course makes sense given the vineyards are surrounded by scrub vegetation including rosemary, lavender and thyme. The medium-to-full bodied palate is savory and subtlety herbal in feel with an underpinning of dried red fruits and plum skin. The finish is quite dry with semi-firm tannins and an appealing, almost tangy spicy pepper note. This wine is begging for something earthy and hearty such as grilled lamb chops or a portabella mushroom burger with garlic, thyme and a spicy aïoli!
