2007 La Rioja Alta Gran Reserva 904, Rioja, Spain

La Rioja Alta has been producing superlative Rioja since its founding in 1890. No expense is spared and the wines are built for long-term aging. This 2007 Gran Reserva is a blend of 90% Tempranillo and 10% Graciano from 60 year old vineyards in Rioja Alta. It is showing well now and -- would be just lovely with a little decanting -- yet still feels like a baby. Here are the production details, “Alcoholic fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks at a temperature of 28 °C and lasted 15 days. Batches were selected and allowed to complete malolactic fermentation naturally over 98 days. In April 2008, the wine was transferred to 4-year-old American oak barrels (made in-house), where it stayed until April 2012. During ageing, the wine was racked every six months using traditional barrel-to-barrel methods. The final blend was bottled in November 2012.”
